During Joe's stream of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+, someone asked him what his favorite non-humanoid alien design in fiction was. After he answered that, stream artist Marik Bentusi said in chat "alien race of blond bunnygirls confirmed?". Then Joe read that out and said "no, please don't draw that" as a reverse-psychology joke.[1] Then Marik said in JADS "we need to condense as many of Joe's kinks as possible", and drew a bunny girl character which conformed to what people suggested to him. He gave this drawing the title "Mars Needs Senpais" (which is meant to be like the title of the film Mars Needs Moms), following the alien theme.

by Marik Bentusi.

At the start of one of his streams a few days later, Joe got into a drawn-out discussion with chat about which type of animal-girl hybrid is the best.[2] This must have reminded him about Marik's drawing, because at the start of the following stream, he did a fake announcement of a Kickstarter for a game called Mars Needs Senpais.[3] But Joe had actually been making a game for a while at that point, so he acted like this was the announcement of his real game.

The Mars Needs Senpais bunnygirl was nominated for the 2022 Chan of the Year Awards.

In July 2023, Marik made a Mars Needs Senpais trailer, featuring the Mars bunny girl, Bomb-chan, and Red Square-chan.[4]
