In Life is Strange, you can read text message conversations between the main character and the other characters. In these, the writers tried to include slang terms and memes that young people used at the time the game was released (in 2015). One reply that the protagonist sends to a character reads simply "= kek", presumably in reference to the kek meme. Joe and chat were confused as to why the equals sign was put before the "kek".[1]
= kek is represented by the emote JphKek.
