In Persona 4 Golden, there are optional scenes where the protagonist works a part-time job in a hospital, and at the end of each one, a nurse comes in to see how he's doing and then usually says something slightly sexually suggestive, then the scene fades to black and ends. During Joe's playthrough, at the end of one of these scenes, several people in chat who clearly didn't know what they were talking about seemed to think that it was implied that the two characters had sex at the end of the scene after the fade-to-black. Joe called these people out, saying that there's no way that they had sex.[1][2] This only prompted people to start saying this more often at the ends of each of these scenes. Then Joe found a comment in chat after one of these which said "Not only did they have sex, it was anal".[3] This caused people to start saying "it was anal" or "ANAL" whenever there was some romance implied between the protagonist and another character, or even just when there was a fade-to-black at the end of a scene. This happened so much that Joe threatened to ban the word.[4] This made people start saying "ALAN" instead.[5]

The meme came up frequently when Joe streamed the Alan Wake series, and he frequently laughed whenever the name Alan came up or when the game made an innuendo.[6] When starting Alan Wake 2 Joe said "This game's going to hit differently with our community, let me tell you".[7]
