In the first Life is Strange: Double Exposure stream, Joe was looking through the settings and saw a Sex Warning setting in the content warning sections, which displays a warning before the game mentions sex or sexual behavior. He turned it on as he thought it was funny, and then enabled the sex warning pause on chat request.[1] Chat began spamming "SEX WARNING" whenever the alert appeared or when sexual content not caught by the warning occurred. This continued into future streams, until a chat member pointed the large overlap with the ALAN meme.

Several artists turned the Sex Warning meme into Warning-chan.
